Chapter 17

Avery was seated at his desk waiting for Max to arrive. He was curious about what Max had found.

“Sorry, that took me longer than I’d anticipated,” Max said, breathy.

“No worries. What do you have?”

Max worked on how she was going to introduce her photo and tie theory on her drive over. “Well,” she started, “after we talked to Duke, I got to thinking that maybe our killer was at the engagement party. I went to visit the photographer your mother hired and looked through the pictures. I came across a butler that just didn’t quite fit. All the other butlers were wearing long-sleeved black shirts and pants with the same tie. This guy had on the same, except his shirt was short-sleeved. I know it seems like a bit of a stretch, but hear me out. I don’t know if it’ll lead to anything, but I had Coral, the photographer, enhance the photo so we could see if we could run it through facial recognition. It’s not the best image, but it’s all we’ve got so far.”

Avery wasn’t sure how Max had made the leap to that theory, but he wasn’t going to ask. It was worth a shot; they didn’t have any other leads, so who was he to shoot it down. “Let’s do it.”

Max was surprised. She thought he’d surely ask for a reason behind theory, but she was glad he didn’t. She pulled up her inbox and called Avery over. “This is the image.”

“Definitely not the best quality, but okay. I think Birch or one of the boys in IT can do something with this.” Avery sounded optimistic, and Max was relieved.

She forwarded the image to Birch with the following message included:

Birch,
